Crown of Horns

Everyone in Tobermory is given a second name.
Some of these, as with Eff Lozenge and Fael, are simply descriptive to their character. Most, however, can be placed after using 'the', such as the Bandirandiruit, the Boysenberry Snark, and the Kokopoko.
In Tobermory, where nobody dies, it is important to know that names are silly things. They are labels; titles. But they fail to express what or who a person is. To call one by his or her real name is taboo unless one believes he or she knows the person well enough that it doesn't matter what he or she calls him or her.


Before he came to Tobermory, Maggoty Tam was named Fievel, he had a home on the wealthy side of Thrasia Flats with his guardian Cassio, and he was mute so as to better listen to the voice of his younger sister as she described, in beautiful words, everything she saw.
Life was sad, but he was happy.

I'm not planning on sharing details of most of the characters right now because most come out during the story, but as it is Tam's tale doesn't affect what happens, and at any rate he can hardly tell anyone about it.
In Thrasia Flats horns and antlers are a sign of wealth; Cassio had a very impressive collection. The fact that he put such a headdress on Fievel was a testament to how well off the family was, but of course, as Fievel learned early on, it isn't money that makes you happy.
